What Is CAD/CAM Dental?

CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing. It is a software program that aids professionals in restorative dentistry. The technology lets dentists design custom-made fixtures like veneers, bridges, ceramic crowns, inlays, onlays, dentures, and partial crowns.

Although the technology has been around since the 1980s, current innovations of specific tools have made the process more accurate, simple, and quick. Patients don’t have to wait weeks for restorations, as dentists can make and fit them in a single appointment.

How Does CAD/CAM Dentistry Work?

Depending on the case’s complexity, CAD/CAM restorations often take between 45 minutes and two hours. Here is a general step by step breakdown of the process:

  • Tooth Preparation: After a full assessment of your teeth, one of our qualified dentists will prepare your tooth or teeth, removing the decay or portions of your structurally compromised tooth.
  • Intraoral Scanning: An optical scanner will then take digital impressions of the affected tooth and surrounding teeth.
  • Restoration Design: From the 3D images, we will use numeric controlled CAD/CAM software to design the restoration fixture.
  • Milling: The milling machine shapes the fixture using a block of ceramics.
  • Sintering and Polishing: We then stain the restoration fixture to make it look natural and align it with the colour of your teeth. We finish with a polish to give it an authentic look.
  • Cementation: We will then place the fixture on the prepared tooth to complete the procedure.

Benefits of CAD/CAM Dentistry

Digital dentistry offers a wide range of benefits. Here are a few:

  • The restoration procedures do not involve dental impressions that require you to place alginate in your mouth, holding the material until it sets.
  • It is cost-effective.
  • CAD/CAM enables single-visit treatments, meaning fewer disruptions in your schedule and a quicker custom-made solution.
